Birds Don’t Read

“Birds Don’t Read” was inspired by memories from the Chain-of-Lake’s region in northern IL where I grew up. We could run down the hill in front of our home, get into our 14-foot runabout boat, and go through various lakes or down the Fox River. One of my favorite lakes was known as ‘Mud Lake’. It was very shallow and filled with cattails, lily pads, and all sorts of wonderful creatures in great abundance: turtles, frogs, water snakes, many species of dragonflies, damsel flies, and birds. There was a narrow channel through Mud Lake that was marked as a ‘no-wake’ zone, with the signs displayed on old, weathered posts stuck in the mud. It wasn’t an area that anyone would want to swim but it was SO much fun to putter slowly through that little lake watching the turtles and frogs popping up to the surface and then disappearing as we got closer, all while the birds and dragonflies zipped around us. This is my tribute to a time of innocence and delight in the natural world that I was so privileged to be able to experience when I was young.
